14 Nigerian School Lunch Box Ideas

I know that if there is something that stresses a mum is what she can have as Nigerian School Lunch box ideas. Going to school, in my primary school days, banana or orange was a constant item in my lunch box. Buying biscuits or sweets was a no, no. My mum made sure you were seriously punished for buying or ‘licking’ sweets. The constraint of time  and children’s preference for pastries and sweets makes  it difficult for mums or sometimes dads to insist on putting healthy lunch options. As we love them dearly we have to give them the best.

The food ideas I am sharing are those ones that come from the regular foods we eat at home , so we are not making anything special. What I have done is to consider foods that can be enjoyed warm or cold and will not easily go bad without refrigerating.  Talking to some mums I found that it requires also considering what foods the kids like to eat at home. Adding fruits to the menu guarantees that our little darlings will have the best meals and develop well and be healthy.

Let me say that our kids watch our eating habits too. So if we are looking to have healthy eaters we ahve to show them by eating healthy ourselves. They have to see us eating the vegetables we preach to them.

You may wish to share the meal plan with your kids and get them to pick what they like from this list. This will ensure they will eat the meals when they get to school. Surely we dont want them begging other kids for food at school.
I will be glad to know how the kids respond to our new Nigerian School Lunch Box Ideas.

  • It seems simple and workable.

If it’s ok, maybe i can suggest? I feel the sandwich types can be varied- corned beef, sardines, even jam can be used as fillings. Depending on taste of the child/ren in question as well. Fried yam i.e chips and eggs/ketchup nko? Other types of rices i.e fried, coconut?

    My two cents ma…..

    • Hi Bussywuzzy, thank you so much for the additional ideas. I am sure as other mums bring on their contributions we will come out of this with more ideas. Two cents for you? Lol!

  • Thank you so much for this lunch pack ideas. For me this would help me to add variety as I am dealing with an over weight daughter right now. I am trying to give her healthier choices in her lunch pack to help with her metabolism. Keep up the good work.

  • What an interesting topic. Long awaited. Bussywuzzy’s suggestion fantastic. Thank you ma for giving us all these.

  • Thanks for sharing this idea. Have been thinking of what n when to prepare different dishes for my 20 month daughter. Pls can you help me with both breakfast n dinner timetable. I will be very glad.

  • i have looked for this high and low for the past 3 years!! Thanks for this. I have 3 issues. One – how do you keep fruits fresh? I have only started eating fruits and I have a freezer (no fridge). suggestions are welcome. Two- how many sandwiches will keep a 6 year old full till school closes at 3pm? My hubby says sandwiches are a poor meal option (health wise). For me they are time and sanity savers when getting ready for work!! Pls help.

    • Hello Esohe, thank you for following my blog. For fruits I store in the fridge. For things like water melon and oranges, I make juices, for example I prefer to blend water melon and this way I can store in the freezer. For fruits like banana which I keep outside the fridge I buy semi ripe so that I can eat the bunch for some days and everything will not ripen at the same time.
For your kids sandwich , I understand your challenge which is time. Sandwiches by the way are practical and you can make them as nutritious as possible depending on the filling. I avoid veggies for school because of keeping challenge . Your 6 year old could do with 2 slices of bread with good filling like chicken. Pair this with 1or 3 bananas and he/she is fine. I hope this helps.

  • Love your suggestions!! Thanks a million!
I actually came here again to get the meal plan and adapt it for the holidays! LOL!! I shall be doing the sandwiches and fruits for summer school and snack time when the whole family goes on holidays!
