Those Killer High Heeled Shoes
Have you noticed how when ladies are headed for a wedding or such functions and we get all dressed up and slip into that 4 inch high heeled shoe and half way through the day we have descended to 1 inch.We have all seen the wisdom in having our pair of slippers in the car or bag when going out. What was the point of the heels? We like our high heeled shoes though but I am not sure those heels like us.
High heel shoes are a young lady’s best friend 4-6 inches , you walk with a swag, swaying your waist from side to side. We truly, do look all put together in those outfits and a pair of lovely heels. A typical saturday in Lagos is a day you see all shades and shapes of these shoes on the streets and at parties. When I watch those ladies that come from the inter lands to Lagos for events you can easily tell by their ‘duck like’ steps on the ‘koi koi’ shoes that it is not a comfortable walk and by the end of the day their shoes are in their hands and they are walking bare foot. Fashion is just sometimes painful.
Recently I watched Rihanna, the pop singer , the other day on TV confess that the shoes she was wearing ‘looked nice but did not feel nice at all‘….. I thought to myself we are all women at the end of the day, pop star or not we can never get used to the discomfort of those killer heels .
It’s another weekend enjoy your high heeled shoes, carry your slippers along and also enjoy these 2 simple offerings I am bringing your way – African Pear and Sweet Corn + African Pear and boiled Yam.
This is my take on the common Nigerian street food Ube and corn. I am taking this one to a whole new level, something I believe can easily be served as a cocktail starter in Nigeria. The yam and Ube used to be my mums idea of a quick meal . So whilst Ube is still in season, make the best of it. Enjoy!
Recipe for Sweet Corn in Ube boats
Ingredients
4 pieces African Pear (Ube in Igbo, Eben in Efik)
1/2 cup canned Sweet Corn
1 table spoon Olive Oil
1/2 medium size Tatashe ( deseeded and diced)
1/2 teaspoon chopped Parsley
Method
1, Wash the pears in cold water, using a sharp knife cut the pear into halves
2, Boil water and place the pear in water to soften
3, Gently lift out the seeds and the seed cover from the pear. Some flesh of the pear may stick to the seed cover, scrape this back into the Ube boat
4,Mix some sweet corn with olive oil, some sprinkle of chopped Tatashe and some chopped Parsley and scoop into the Ube boats.
5, Serve on its own as entree or starter to a meal
Recipe for Boiled Yam and Ube
1, Boil the yam, add the Ube to the yam pot when the yam is almost soft/cooked.
2, Serve the Yam with Ube and pepper sauce.
