Grilled Mackerel Fish – Low Body Fat on Nigerian Food

I am currently keeping a close eye on my BMI and that is why I pick dishes like Grilled Mackerel Fish. Whilst your weight is a good indication of your health status what seems to be more important today is your Body Mass Index (BMI). Your BMI is the percentage of muscle you have as against fat. I did a recent calculation on my BMI level and I have made some adjustments to my cooking.
It is my one month challenge to ensure that I come down on my BMI from the 25% where I am today to 23% which is midway for normalcy. The normal range is 18%- 24%.

What exactly have I done?  First I have further reduced palm oil in my cooking.  I have found better alternative carbohydrates like Irish Potatoes, sweet potatoes, fonio and other whole grain cereals  for now. Oh sure I still eat very small quantities of yam , rice and bread anytime I feel like eating these. I sometimes measure in spoons. My protein options of  fish and chicken as well as increasing my vegetables and fruits is helping. I have also stepped up my Exercise and burned more calories whilst building some muscle.

I know how many people struggle to maintain low BMI. It is challenging when eating oily Nigerian soups and swallows. The situation is made more challenging when we do not exercise.  My recommendation is simple eat moderately and keep walking. I also recomend to keep the size of ‘swallows’ to about the size of a tennis ball but eat more vegetable soups . However the soups have to be cooked with small quantity of oil . For Egusi soup you can squeeze out much of the oil before using in soups.

Dinner seem to be the major culprit in Nigerian diet. This is because we get back from work eat our swallows and sleep. Over time the weight piles up on the tummy area and other health issues develop. We can take simple steps to prevent bigger health problems. Eat well stay well and enjoy longer healthy life. Start by making som Grilled Mackerel fish with one or two boiled Potato for dinner.
